New research reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying such medications must be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle management.
