In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the New Political Agreement
According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
