A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.
The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
